Most days I rock the earth goddess look: no make up, no nail polish, no hair gel.  Sometimes I want to look a little more polished so I wear a little makeup.  Sometimes I need a protective layer between me and the world.  Makeup does the trick then too.  Most recently a study found that women who wear makeup to work make more money.  So until society catches up to my ideal, I will be wearing makeup more often.

Since tomorrow is my birthday I will probably wear makeup.  I feel like I’ve finally found makeup that I love and can apply to my satisfaction.  Also they don’t trigger my allergies.  I try to make sure I use products without any harmful chemical while not breaking my budget but the real test is if it doesn’t make my nose stuffy or my skin/eyes/ears itchy.  I’ve tried products in stores where the fragrance was so strong I had to take an antihistamine immediately.Monetta_Wilson_2015_Young_Entrepreneur_of_the_year

Let’s begin with foundation.  I use Revlon Nearly Naked Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20, 290 Cappuccino.

I am wearing this foundation in the picture on the right.  I love it because it’s easy to apply and if you put only a small layer it looks like you don’t have any makeup just really smooth skin.  I also love that it has no noticeable scent and it blends nicely with my skin.  I love that I only need one color through all seasons.  With most makeup I find if I get a little sun and my skin tone changes I need new foundation but this one blends so well that it adapts to changes in my skin tone. I also like that you can get this makeup easily from your local pharmacy or online. You can look up the ingredients on EWG’s product page.

The eyes.

I only recently became adept at eye makeup.  Up until recently I was a mascara and go type of girl.  Mostly because I didn’t have the patience to learn how to put on eye makeup and when I did try it would disappear over time because apparently my eye lids sweat. I finally found some makeup that’s easy to apply and stay put.

When it comes to mascara I have always used some version of Maybelline New York Great Lash in the blackest black available. Currently I am loving the Maybelline New York Great Lash Big Washable Mascara“. It comes with a really big want that makes it quick and easy to apply. Also it passes the important test of not triggering any allergic reactions. I still have my mascara and go days. On those days I find the big want gives me nice dramatic lashes in a jiffy. You can look up the ingredients on EWg’s product page.

When it comes to eye shadow I have always loved the kind that comes with 4 colors and tell you where to use them. However I have not always loved the results. Also eye shadow has been my scariest makeup because I’ve ended up with swollen heavy lids before. I’ve finally found a friend in Revlon Photoready Primer, Shadow + Sparkle. I use color number 535, pop art. It’s great for getting a nice smokey eye look. I get creative and use as little or as much of the colors as I like. Lately, I’ve been using the dark brown crease color as a liner. I have yet to find an eye liner that I like. I use this alone or sometimes I add Maybelline 24 Hour Eyeshadow, Bad To The Bronze. You can look Photoready’s ingredients on EWg’s product page.

My latest addition to my makeup bag is Maybelline 24 Hour Eyeshadow, Bad To The Bronze. I was looking sparkly bronze eye shadow for an event when I came across this shadow. Boy do I love this! First its a cream shadow so it stays on really well. Secondly, in a bind you can apply it with your fingers; although I’m weary of introducing bacteria if my finger is not quite clean.Thirdly, it blends well with my Photoready shadow. And finally it looks great on it’s own. You can look up the ingredients on EWg’s product page.

Let’s go over how I got the look in the first picture. I didn’t wear foundation because it was a very hot day. When I get hot and sweaty I tend to wipe my face; realizing too late that I’ve wiped off my makeup. I started with primer in the inside corner of the eye. Then I added the brow color to the inner eye and under the brow. I used color tattoo on the inside half of the lid and the lid color from photoready on the outside half of the lid. I used the crease color as eyeliner using an angle brush for precision application. I finished up with my Great Lash mascara. I was really happy with the results. My eyes came out just the way I wanted it to.

The Lips

Lips have always been my thing. From chapstick, petroleum jelly and coconut oil; I’ve graduated to full blown lip color. I have always been a tinted tip gloss kind of girl. I love the subtle hint of color. In college I would procrastinate doing the reading by playing with my lip gloss. Also I hate everything about lipstick. EVERYTHING.

I stuck with lip gloss until I found Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Blur Lip Color earlier this year. It’s a matte pencil with a smudger. You can use the smudger to create an ombre lip or you can use it as full on matte color. You can also do what I do which is use a lip balm base and several colors to make your own color. I own 3 colors: 10 fast &fuchia, 30 partner in crimson, and 35 plum please. I start with Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Moisturizing Lip Balm, Pink Grapefruit. This is my attempt at protecting my lips from any harmful ingredients in the lip colr. I am sure this is all in my head but I do it anyway. Then I do either one color or a mixture of colors. For the look in the first picture I used #35 as a lip line and #10 on the lip to create fullness. I smudge the two colors to smooth out the edges. Then I applied #25 over the blend and smudged lightly to create depth. EWG product page

You can see how it all came together with my outfit in the picture below.
